The Brief
MoneyMade Verdict
Coinbase NFT is no longer operational — the marketplace was officially shut down on August 1, 2024, with its functionality migrated to the Base app, making it a non-option for NFT buyers, sellers, or collectors today.
Coinbase NFT was launched in April 2022 as a dedicated marketplace for buying, selling, and minting NFTs, built on top of Coinbase's existing crypto infrastructure. The platform was positioned as a mainstream-friendly alternative to OpenSea — leveraging Coinbase's 100M+ user base, simpler onboarding, and fiat on-ramps. At launch, Coinbase NFT supported NFTs on Ethereum and Polygon, offered gas-free minting via L2 integrations, and experimented with social features like profile customization and NFT-based communities.
However, the platform struggled to gain meaningful market share against OpenSea, Blur, Magic Eden, and other entrenched competitors. By mid-2024, monthly trading volume had collapsed to a small fraction of peer platforms, and Coinbase announced the official shutdown of Coinbase NFT on August 1, 2024. At closure, the marketplace's functionality was migrated to the Base app — Coinbase's mobile-first ecosystem built on top of its Base L2 blockchain — meaning NFT buying and selling for Coinbase users now happens through Base app integrations with third-party marketplaces rather than through a Coinbase-branded NFT marketplace.
